Resolution of the Council and Ministers for Education, meeting within the Council of 6 December 1990, concerning the Eurydice Education Information Network in the European Community [Official Journal C 329 of 31.12.1990].


The aim of the Eurydice network is to provide all professionals responsible for education systems and education policies in Europe with analyses and information at European level in order to help them with their decision-making.

The Eurydice network is principally concerned with the way in which education in Europe is structured and organised at all levels. It provides a wide source of information, including:

  • detailed descriptions and overviews of national education systems;
  • comparative thematic studies on subjects of particular European interest;
  • indicators and statistics;
  • a set of facts and figures relating to education, such as school and academic calendars, comparisons of teachers’ and head teachers’ salaries, and comparisons of teaching times.


The Eurydice network supports and facilitates European cooperation in the field of education and lifelong learning by providing information on European education systems, and analysis of these systems and education policies.

It consists of 37 national units based in the 33 countries which participate in the European Union (EU) programme in the field of education and lifelong learning (EU Member States, EFTA countries, Croatia and Turkey). It is coordinated and managed by the EU’s Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency situated in Brussels.

Since 1980, the Eurydice network has been one of the strategic mechanisms established by the European Commission and the Member States to support European cooperation in the field of education. Since 2007, Eurydice has been an integral part of the European Lifelong Learning Programme.

Cooperation with other partners

Eurydice cooperates closely with several other European and international organisations.

Since 1995, the Key Figures reports have been published on the basis of a partnership between Eurydice and Eurostat (the Office for European Communities Statistics). Eurydice collaborates with Eurostat in order to regularly update and renew this wide range of indicators. Since 2005, the Centre for Research on Education and Lifelong Learning (CRELL) has also been a significant partner with regard to indicators.

As a result of the ever closer connection between education and training, Eurydice works closely with the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) and the European Training Foundation (ETF) as regards Turkey and the Balkan countries.

Eurydice also cooperates closely with the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education.

Lastly, the Eurydice European Unit supports the Commission in its work with international organisations such as the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and UNESCO.
